Sending a child off to college is a massive milestone for any parent. Especially when you are sending twins off to different schools, it is a double dose of major life changes. Even global superstars are not immune to the deep, emotional rollercoaster of the impending empty nest.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! show, Jennifer Lopez opened up about the bittersweet reality of watching her 18-year-old twins, Max and Emme, prepare for their next big chapter.
Jennifer Lopez’s kids will leave for college soon and she has been ‘crying’ about it
While Jennifer Lopez is used to hearing roaring applause from thousands of strangers, she admitted that nothing compares to the simple joy of her kids coming home. “If my kids come to the door, I feel so lucky,” the singer shared.
With high school graduation officially here, the reality of them leaving home has hit hard. When host Jimmy Kimmel asked if she would cry at the ceremony, Lopez did not hold back.
“Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I’ve been crying for two months,” Lopez confessed. She jokingly added that she finds herself looking around at the other parents to see who is not crying because the transition is incredibly tough. The emotional dam broke a couple of months ago when she had to write the parent dedication page for the school yearbook. “When I tell you the tears… two days it took me to write those things,” Lopez said.
The transition is made even more complex as the twins are heading to different colleges. Max and Emme are pursuing separate paths, and Lopez is fully supportive of them. “I want them to be happy and go where they want to go and do what they want to do,” the singer insisted. “They have big dreams. They have things they want to do. It’s gonna be great,” she added.
When asked if she would actually help move them into their dorms, Lopez gave a firm, “Absolutely.” She already has a very practical, mom-approved game plan. Instead of hitting up major department stores, she is shopping from home. “We have sheets at the house, bringing the sheets,” Lopez laughed. “We’re gonna pack up their rooms here and they’re gonna take all the things that they want to take to their dorm.”
Like any mom, Lopez is already counting down to their first visit back. “Then they’re gonna realize that their dorms are too small and that they’re gonna miss home,” the mother of two said with a smile. “I hope they want to come back real soon.”
