Tom Hanks opens up about one ‘heartbreaking’ scene from Toy Story 5
On the red carpet of Pixar’s Toy Story 5 premiere, Tom Hanks described a specific scene from the film as “heartbreaking.” “I think what happens in these movies is they end up speaking and puts in words [and] stuff that everybody is thinking anyway,” the actor told The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever seen in any of the Toy Story movies. It is when that little girl is getting her feelings hurt by what other people are texting about her.”
The Forrest Gump actor continued, “She doesn’t understand why and how. She doesn’t know what she did wrong, but it hurts. That is a very prescient thing to have in a motion picture today about little kids and toys, don’t you think?”
While the scene does sound too somber for a kids’ movie, Toy Story films have never been too shy to tackle deeply emotional topics. So, it’s no surprise that the fifth installment is following in the footsteps of the franchise’s legacy.
Toy Story 5 will feature most of the fan-favorite characters as they fight their biggest enemy to date — technology. After the arrival of a kid’s digital tablet named Lilypad, the toys fear that they could lose Bonnie forever. This prompts Woody to return to his friends and help them through their troubling times.
Hanks once again lends his voice to Woody. He is joined by other returning members of the voice cast, including Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, Joan Cusack as Jessie, Wallace Shawn as Rex, Annie Potts as Bo Peep, and Bonnie Hunt as Dolly, among others. Emmy-winning actress Greta Lee is the new addition to the cast and will be voicing Lilypad.
Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris wrote and directed the film. Stanton has been an integral part of the franchise, co-writing nearly all of the Toy Story films. Furthermore, he also helmed beloved titles like Finding Nemo and WALL-E.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19.
