Sweeney’s Cassie Howard has become known for her bold, boundary-pushing scenes. However, the closing episode of Season 3, “In God We Trust,” might take it further than anything before. That does speak a lot, considering viewers have already seen Sweeney cosplaying as a baby, a dog, and also going nude on screen in the past few weeks.
In the season finale, which aired on May 31, the episode follows Cassie as she deals with keeping a secret about Nate. In the meantime, she also has an emotional talk with her sister Lexi, played by Maude Apatow. Lexi speaks of her guilt over her fallout with Rue, and the conversation shifts to Rue’s reading of The Bible. Lexi and Cassie then discuss Rue’s smile and how a “smile says a lot about a person.”
However, many viewers said this profound scene featured a shocking moment – Cassie wiping a sex toy. Right after, Sweeney’s character proposes that both sisters work together as professionals, which Lexi declines. In the same scene, Cassie asks Lexi, still holding the same toy, “Are you saying no because of the Bible?”
Fans were uncomfortable with the creator pairing that gesture with a conversation about The Bible. Many took to social media to share their reactions.
