The actress and author, 47, posted two photos on Instagram showing herself lying beside and partially on top of her eldest son while embracing him on a bed. While the images appeared to depict a mother-son cuddle, they quickly sparked debate online, with some social media users criticizing the photos as inappropriate.

Some commenters reacted harshly to the post. “This is creepy and wildly inappropriate,” one person wrote. Another called the images “disturbing,” while others expressed discomfort with the photos.
Not everyone agreed with the criticism, however. Several supporters defended Mollen, arguing that the images simply showed a mother affectionately hugging her child. A source close to the situation also told PEOPLE that the photos were “nothing more than a mother hugging her 12-year-old son” and suggested that alternative interpretations were unfair.

Mollen later addressed the backlash on Instagram Stories, admitting she was shocked by the response. She reportedly suggested that her recent separation may have made people view her posts differently than they would have in the past.
This is not the first time Mollen has spoken about public criticism tied to parenting. Earlier this year, she reflected on sharing a childhood accident involving Sid and said she regretted making the story public because of the lasting online attention it generated.
