M.I.A. launched a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Kid Cudi after she was removed from his Rebel Rangers tour. The legal dispute erupted weeks after the singer allegedly made political remarks onstage that reportedly drew complaints from concertgoers.
What started as a tour partnership has now turned into a courtroom battle worth more than $2.8 million. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in California on May 29, alleged that Kid Cudi, whose real name is Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, improperly pushed for M.I.A.’s removal from the Live Nation-produced tour.
Kid Cudi axed M.I.A. from the Rebel Rangers tour after making offensive comments during her set
According to court documents obtained by Rolling Stone, M.I.A. claimed that the rapper was fully aware of her public views and outspoken reputation before inviting her to join the tour as an opening act.
The conflict reportedly stemmed from comments M.I.A. made during a performance in Dallas. According to reports, she told the crowd that she had been “canceled” for being a Republican voter and made additional remarks connected to immigration while discussing her song Illegal.
Shortly afterward, Kid Cudi announced her removal from the remainder of the tour, claiming he had received numerous messages from fans upset by her comments. He added that he would not allow anyone on the tour to make remarks that offended his audience.
According to Variety, M.I.A. later responded on X, clarifying that she could not vote in the United States. She also reportedly pointed out that many Latino voters had supported Donald Trump and mentioned, “So are you going to hate them all?”
In the lawsuit, M.I.A. alleged that Kid Cudi’s public explanation contained false statements and intentionally damaged her professional reputation. Court filings claimed his actions interfered with her contractual relationship with Live Nation and resulted in the loss of a guaranteed $2.805 million payment, as well as merchandise and VIP package sales.
A spokesperson for M.I.A. defended the artist and argued that freedom of expression has always been central to her career. The statement alleged that Kid Cudi’s reaction was an attempt to generate publicity for a tour that had reportedly struggled with ticket sales.
The legal fight remains ongoing, and it will ultimately be up to the courts to determine whether M.I.A.’s removal from the Rebel Rangers tour violated the terms of her agreement.
