Tom Holland has shared that having Zendaya by his side made Spider-Man: Brand New Day less challenging. For the unversed, the duo met on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2016.
Tom Holland says Zendaya was his ‘lifeline’ on Spider-Man 4
Tom Holland recently opened up about how Zendaya became his anchor on Spider-Man 4, helping him stay grounded through the pressure of stepping back into Peter Parker’s suit.
During his Tuesday, June 2, appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Holland lit up while talking about sharing the screen with his real-life partner Zendaya. She also plays his onscreen love interest, MJ.
“It’s a lifeline. I couldn’t imagine doing what I do without her,” he said.
The Uncharted actor then went on to describe “an amazing moment” the two had on the set of the latest Spider-Man film. “It’s only because of our relationship that this happened,” he added.
“We’re doing her coverage — and I would never ever dream of saying this to an actress that I wasn’t with,” Holland explained, adding, “So I said, ‘Do you think that this scene is working?’ And she was like, ‘No. I don’t think the scene is working at all.'”
Bolstered by Zendaya’s support, Holland brought their concern to the producers and asked if they thought the scene was working. When the producers admitted it wasn’t coming together, Holland agreed and said he and Zendaya weren’t feeling it either.
The Edge of Winter actor then went to director Destin Daniel Cretton and voiced the same concern. He praised Cretton for listening patiently and staying calm while they shared their doubts about the scene.
“He said to the crew, ‘Everyone can go home and we’re gonna sit down and rewrite this scene,” Holland revealed.
They reshot the scene the very next day, and Tom Holland said that he was grateful they did because it turned out beautifully in the final cut. He credited the change to the trust he shares with Zendaya. Holland noted he wouldn’t have felt comfortable raising the issue if he were working with any other co-star.
