Quentin Tarantino Says Many New Hollywood Films Are ‘Plain Stupid S**t’

Quentin Tarantino has delivered some harsh words on the current state of Hollywood movies. The Oscar-winning filmmaker says many recent releases fail because of poor creative decisions. In a new essay, the director shared his frustration with modern filmmaking and explained why he struggles to enjoy many new releases. While he praised a handful of recent projects, he argued that too many films are being undermined by avoidable mistakes before they ever reach audiences.

Quentin Tarantino isn’t impressed with many new Hollywood movies

Writing for Sight & Sound magazine, Quentin Tarantino said it has become “almost impossible” for him to watch a new movie without picking it apart. He argued that “flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast performers or just plain stupid s**t” often end up sinking modern releases. The filmmaker went even further, describing Hollywood as a “flavorless sausage factory” and saying today’s movie landscape inspires more frustration than excitement (via Variety).

Despite his criticism, Tarantino noted that he has enjoyed a few films in recent years. He specifically mentioned Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga chapters one and two. However, he said none of them fully recaptured the sense of wonder that once made movies his favorite art form. “These days I’d rather read a book,” he wrote.

However, the iconic director gave a big thumbs-up to Netflix’s crime thriller The Rip, directed by Joe Carnahan with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in the lead roles. The story follows Miami-Dade officers who stumble into a web of corruption tied to $20 million in cartel cash. Tarantino was clearly impressed, praising the film from top to bottom.

The filmmaker loved the suspense, gave props to Carnahan’s direction, and also shouted out the cast and screenplay. “The film is an exciting cop thriller with a novel premise that manages to deliver the goods in really clever ways,” he wrote.

Away from filmmaking, Tarantino is currently developing a stage production titled The Popinjay Cavalier, a swashbuckling comedy set in 1930s Europe that is scheduled to open in London’s West End in 2027.
