Donald Trump has made yet another controversial Washington announcement. The president revealed his latest plan to reshape Washington’s monumental core with a new structure near the Lincoln Memorial.
Donald Trump makes new announcement about Lincoln Memorial
President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that a promenade will be built onto the Lincoln Memorial, Reuters reported. He told reporters at the White House that the structure would extend the memorial down to the Potomac River. “They want to call it the Trump Promenade, but I don’t know if I want to do that, but it’s going to be beautiful,” Trump said.
The promenade would be built over two roads that run alongside the memorial. The project aims to allow pedestrians to cross over the roads and reach the Potomac River and nearby tourist sites. “It’s a beautiful project, and it’s going to take the Lincoln Memorial right down to the Potomac, which it was always scheduled to do,” he said. The White House provided no additional details about the project.
The announcement arrived on the same day that water began flowing into the renovated Reflecting Pool. Trump had a new surface installed in a color he calls “American flag blue.” The Lincoln Memorial sits at the western end of the National Mall overlooking the pool.
The promenade forms part of Trump’s broader push to reshape Washington’s monumental core. The former property developer also intends to erect a 250-foot arch across the Potomac River from the memorial. A U.S. planning commission on Thursday advanced that arch proposal. Trump is also building a 90,000-square-foot ballroom at the site of the demolished White House East Wing.
Several of Trump’s Washington projects have faced legal challenges in recent months. A judge last week ordered the performing arts center to be renamed the Kennedy Center. A governing board of Trump appointees had previously renamed it the Trump-Kennedy Center. The White House has not shared timelines for the promenade’s construction or completion.
