Retired Detective Fears Nancy Guthrie May Not Have Survived Kidnapping

The search for Nancy Guthrie has taken an even more troubling turn. Investigators continue to solve the disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of Today’s co-host, Savannah Guthrie. A retired detective following the case now fears the evidence may point to a tragic outcome.

Those concerns surfaced during a recent interview, where former detective Jon Buehler discussed several details that he believes raise serious questions about whether Nancy survived the alleged abduction. While authorities have not announced any conclusions, Buehler said certain facts from the scene continue to worry him.

Speaking with NewsNation’s Brian Entin, Buehler explained that the lack of a clear ransom demand was one of the biggest red flags in the case.

According to the retired detective, kidnappers seeking financial gain typically move quickly to establish contact and provide proof that a victim is alive. In Nancy’s case, he noted that while multiple ransom notes were reportedly discovered, investigators have not publicly revealed any definitive demand accompanied by evidence of her well-being.

“The reason I’m fearful she didn’t survive the abduction is kind of twofold,” Buehler said during the interview.

The second concern involved physical evidence reportedly found outside Nancy’s Tucson home. According to Buehler, a significant amount of blood was discovered at the scene, suggesting a serious injury may have occurred during an apparent struggle.

He also pointed to Nancy’s age and health. Buehler noted that the stress of an abduction could have been especially dangerous for someone who reportedly uses a pacemaker and has ongoing medical issues.

Despite his concerns, the former detective stressed that the investigation remains highly solvable. Buehler suggested that modern technology could ultimately provide the breakthrough investigators need. He pointed to vehicle tracking data, surveillance footage, and digital map searches as potential sources of evidence. He also theorized that the suspect could have been someone familiar with Nancy’s home, such as a service worker or delivery driver.

The retired detective further cautioned that important clues can sometimes be overlooked during large-scale investigations. He referenced past criminal cases where critical evidence sat unnoticed for days, or even years, before leading investigators to answers.
