Donald Trump has threatened to slap 100% tariff on any European country that imposes a digital tax. The president announced that the tariff would supersede any previous trade deals made with the country. Donald Trump warns Europe over digital tax
In a Truth Social post on Friday, Donald Trump announced that he would impose 100% tariffs on any European country that imposes a digital services tax on American tech companies.
The president wrote, “Numerous European Countries have been discussing the imminent implementation of a Digital Services Tax on American Companies. Some of these Countries are close to actually doing this.”
Trump then announced, “Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America.”
The president added that the new tariff “will supersede Trade Deals made with the Country, whether implemented, signed, or not.” He further warned, “The 100% TARIFF will be immediately imposed, if they proceed.”
Trump’s latest tariff threat against European countries comes amid his decreasing popularity in those nations. A recent survey by the Pew Research Center has found that a majority in all 10 European countries lack confidence in the U.S. president “to do the right thing regarding world affairs.”
According to the poll, a median of 85% across 10 European nations disapprove of Trump’s handling of diplomatic crises. These include tariffs, attempts to take over Greenland, the conflict in Gaza, as well as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the Iran war.
The data also shows that eight out of 10 European nations no longer view the U.S. as reliable. Additionally, the overall ratings for the U.S. have declined in a majority of the countries across the Atlantic.
