Most Americans Don’t Want Donald Trump’s Name on the Kennedy Center — Poll

A new poll revealed public opposition to having Donald Trump’s name on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The findings came as the legal case continues over the controversial renaming. It was briefly made official before a federal judge intervened.

Poll shows Americans back removing Donald Trump’s name from Kennedy Center

The Economist/YouGov survey found that 54% of Americans support stripping Donald Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center. Only a quarter of respondents want the name to stay. The poll dropped Tuesday, putting a number to widespread disapproval of a change that board members pushed through earlier this year.

Workers took down Trump’s name from the building’s exterior on June 13. That action complied with a federal judge’s order, which declared Congress had permanently dedicated the center to honor John F. Kennedy alone. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper gave the institution two weeks to scrub the name from all materials and surfaces.

Rep. Joyce Beatty, an ex officio board member from Ohio, filed the lawsuit that triggered the reversal. She stated she was muted during the board meeting when she attempted to speak against the renaming.

Trump’s handpicked Kennedy Center board fired back quickly. They voted on June 11 to appeal the ruling. Government lawyers now argue that peeling the president’s name off the building could trigger a financial disaster. They claim donors might yank hundreds of millions of dollars in promised contributions. Beatty’s attorneys dismiss this as “a transparent attempt to manufacture harm.”

The president’s legal team has since raced to an appeals court, seeking an emergency stay. They want a freeze on the removal order while judges reconsider the case. Their filings warn that gifts must be “returned, refunded, or terminated” if Trump’s branding vanishes (via The Atlantic).

The reporting exposes the foundation behind those claims. Business records show someone quietly reshaped the old Kennedy Center Foundation—born under President Joe Biden in 2024—into the Trump Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Foundation this past March. Yet, crucial details remain murky.
