The post read, “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in a hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly, but for now, ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”
The Wales-born singer enjoyed a remarkable career spanning nearly five decades. She became known after her first hit song, “Lost in France,” in 1976. Her raspy voice, which is behind many hit songs, came about by accident.
In 1977, Tyler underwent surgery to remove vocal nodules from her vocal cords and was advised to rest her voice. One day, she screamed in anger, which altered her voice permanently, according to Reuters. Several years later, she released her signature hit, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which was nominated for a Grammy. The song surpassed a billion streams on Spotify this year.
She represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013. Although she enjoyed international success, particularly in Austria, France, and Norway, she achieved comparatively fewer chart successes in her home country during the later years of her career.
Tyler, whose real name was Gaynor Hopkins, kept her life as Gaynor alive behind the rockstar life. She was known for hosting her fun house parties in Swansea. According to the BBC, Tyler had been receiving treatment in Portugal following complications related to intestinal surgery.
