Remembering Brenda Fricker’s Oscar-winning career and Home Alone 2 role

The U.S. Sun confirmed Fricker’s death on July 17 through her agent, Phil Belfield. The outlet reported that she had faced an illness, though her agent Phil Belfield did not share further medical details. “We will never see her like again, and the world is lesser for the lack of her,” Belfield said. He added that Fricker would always have a place in his heart and those of fans worldwide.

Fricker reached a career milestone with her performance as Bridget Brown in Jim Sheridan’s 1989 drama My Left Foot. She played the determined mother of Christy Brown, the Irish writer and painter portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis.

The Academy awarded Fricker best supporting actress at the 1990 Oscars. The victory made her the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award and placed her among Ireland’s most celebrated screen performers.

Fricker dedicated the award to Christy Brown’s mother during her acceptance speech. “Anybody who gives birth twenty-two times deserves one of these, I think. I’d like to thank Jim Sheridan and Shane Connaughton for the best script I’ve ever been involved in,” she told the audience.

Two years later, Fricker reached a new generation as the Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Her guarded character befriended Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, and gave the comedy one of its most emotional storylines.

Her wide-ranging career also included The Field, Angels in the Outfield, A Time to Kill, Veronica Guerin, and the BBC medical drama Casualty. She worked across film, television, and theater for more than six decades.

Fricker reflected on her life in the 2025 memoir She Died Young: A Life in Fragments, which explored her career and the difficult experiences that shaped her.

Belfield called it an honor to know, love, and work with Fricker. Her Oscar secured her place in film history, while her warmth in Home Alone 2 ensured that millions would remember her every holiday season.
