Benjamin Netanyahu’s Next Trip to New York Just Became Far More Controversial

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sparked fresh debate after making strong comments about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The mayor spoke about the matter in a recent interview with The New York Times. His comments soon drew criticism from U.S. officials. The comments also raised questions about the legal limits of local government authority.

Zohran Mamdani’s administration is discussing what actions could legally be taken during Netanyahu’s visit

In an interview with The New York Times, Mamdani called Netanyahu a war criminal and said he believes the Israeli leader belongs in The Hague. He mentioned the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu for war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with the Gaza war. Netanyahu rejects the accusations. Israel also denies the ICC jurisdiction over the case.

Mamdani said he has spoken with New York City’s Law Department about whether the city has any legal authority if Netanyahu visits New York. The mayor’s remarks come before the September United Nations General Assembly session. World leaders, including Netanyahu, could travel to New York for the annual meeting.

The mayor’s comments were soon criticized. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz called the comments “pure political theater.” Waltz cited the U.N. Headquarters Agreement, which safeguards visiting heads of government during their official U.N. business. He said those safeguards make local authorities unable to make an arrest.

Mamdani’s comments also started a wider debate about the powers of local governments in international matters. If Netanyahu could attend the U.N. General Assembly in New York this September, the issue might get more attention. For the time being, Mamdani’s comments have sparked a new political debate.
