Drake lost a potential $5.1 million payday after Argentina fell to Spain in the FIFA World Cup Final
Drake’s $1.5 million World Cup bet required Argentina to defeat Spain in regulation time. Before the final, he shared an Instagram post showing the Stake wager. The slip listed odds of 3.45 and a total potential return of $5.175 million.
Argentina and Spain remained locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes, so the bet had already failed when extra time began. Even a later Argentina victory would not have saved Drake’s wager. Because he chose a three-way moneyline bet instead of simply backing Argentina to lift the trophy, Stake counted only the first 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time did not matter.
Spain then sealed the result. FIFA reported that substitute Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute, securing a 1-0 victory and Spain’s second men’s World Cup title. Lionel Messi and Argentina could not find an equalizer.
The result cost Drake his $1.5 million stake, not $5.1 million. The larger figure represented the full potential payout, including his original stake. Drake sounded confident before kickoff. Alongside the screenshot, he wrote, “What’s that saying??? Better luck next time… say less,” and tagged Stake. The post soon looked premature as Spain denied Argentina back-to-back World Cup trophies.
This was not Drake’s first World Cup betting heartbreak. In 2022, he placed $1 million on Argentina to beat France in regulation time. Argentina eventually won on penalties, but the 90-minute draw still sank his wager.
Drake lost another $1 million after backing the New England Patriots in the 2026 Super Bowl. His latest defeat will likely revive jokes about the so-called “Drake curse”, a fan superstition tied to teams and athletes he supports.
