South Carolina’s new Sen. Darline Graham is looking beyond her late brother Lindsey Graham’s political focus as she begins her Senate journey. Darline said she will keep her attention on issues that have a direct impact on everyday Americans. She also confirmed that she will run for a full Senate term. Her decision comes days after she took over Lindsey’s seat following his death.
Here’s why Darline Graham says she’ll take a different approach from Lindsey
On Monday, July 20, Darline appeared with Sean Hannity on Fox News and talked about watching her brother speak on politics for years. Often she heard Lindsey talk about national security and protecting the country’s borders, she said. Darline said those issues matter, but she also wants lawmakers to discuss grocery prices, gas prices, healthcare, and insurance.
Darline took the oath as South Carolina’s newest U.S. senator on July 14. She became the first woman to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate. She filled in until Lindsey’s term expires in January. Darline was also the first sister to be believed to have replaced a late U.S. senator.
President Donald Trump encouraged Darline to run in the upcoming special election. Trump shared his support in a Friday, July 17, post on Truth Social. In her Hannity interview, Darline revealed that she prayed and spoke to her family before making her decision. “I’ve made a decision, I’m in,” she said.
According to preliminary results of the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Lindsey Graham passed away at the age of 71 due to ruptured aorta caused by chronic heart disease. His communications director, Taylor Reidy, posted the results on X on Sunday, July 12. Darline said her brother did not take proper care of his health while serving in office. The Republican primary to select a candidate for the special election is on Aug. 11 and will be followed by a general election in November.
