Princess Diana’s late-night routine often conflicted with the Royal Family’s early schedule and daily traditions
Reports from InStyle suggest that Diana started her mornings early and preferred to end her evenings just as quickly. Her former royal chef, Darren McGrady, said she usually woke around 7 a.m. She reportedly aimed to be asleep by 8 p.m.
McGrady explained that Diana typically ate dinner around 6:30 pm. Her schedule became difficult when the Royal Family planned formal dinners or evening activities. Those events often continued well beyond the time Diana wanted to sleep.
Her routine reportedly created particular problems during summer stays at Balmoral Castle. According to McGrady, royal family members sometimes spent the entire evenings outdoors. They could reportedly return from the hills as late as 11 p.m.
This schedule did not suit Diana’s preference for an early night. She reportedly disliked Balmoral partly because its outdoor traditions kept her awake. The princess reportedly preferred the comfort and convenience of her London lifestyle.
Diana’s early bedtime also reportedly conflicted with royal protocol. Sir William Heseltine, Queen Elizabeth‘s former private secretary, discussed these struggles. He reportedly shared that Diana sometimes left royal gatherings before the Queen would go to bed.
Her former chef also remembered Diana’s relaxed evenings away from formal royal occasions. On some Saturday nights, she reportedly ate dinner while watching television with her sons. Those evenings reportedly gave her a sense of normality away from royal responsibilities.
Diana’s schedule also reportedly differed sharply from Prince Charles‘ working habits. Charles reportedly stayed awake late handling correspondence and official matters. These contrasting routines highlighted another difference between the couple’s personalities and lifestyles.
For Diana, an early bedtime was more than a preference. It reportedly helped her maintain a routine despite demanding royal responsibilities. However, that habit sometimes placed her in a tough spot with the royal family traditions.
