CNN anchor Dana Bash has alleged that Donald Trump is “profiting from his presidency.” The remarks came after Trump launched his new venture, “Truth API.”
Trump Media’s new offering drew fresh questions about ethics and insider trading
The news anchor Dana Bash questioned the Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG)’s new launch, “Truth API.” The API is a paid data feed for trading organizations that provide them with access to posts from high-ranking Trump’s Truth Social accounts. It will provide firms with millisecond-faster access than the general public.
While appearing on-air, Bash questioned the launch. She said, “How is this not insider trading? President Trump’s media company is going to start selling Wall Street firms faster access to Truth Social posts, including the president and his son’s [posts]. It appears to be yet another example of the Trump family profiting off of his presidency.”
However, Dave Goldman, senior business reporter at CNN, stated that it’s common for platforms like X and Meta to sell API access, but a question is raised about Trump’s 40% stake in the company. He said, “So basically, this is the company saying, yes, we acknowledge that people are buying and selling stocks based on what the president says on Truth Social. And now we’re going to sell even faster access to it so that the company can make money.”
The Trump administration has responded to the accusations by CNN reporters. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said these accusations are “absolutely absurd,” claiming that Trump has sacrificed his personal earnings for the public. Many investigative reports suggest that Trump has generated billions of dollars from his digital assets.
The Truth media API has earned criticism from different people, according to Ok! Magazine. Utah Republican Sen. John Curtis also criticised the platform, stating it’s not good governance. However, Donald Trump has not addressed the accusations himself.
