Hunter Biden sharply criticized CNN anchor Jake Tapper during another unfiltered podcast appearance. The former president’s son mixed personal insults with complaints about how Tapper covered Joe Biden’s 2024 re-election campaign.
Hunter Biden blasted Tapper’s journalism while revisiting coverage of his father’s re-election bid
Hunter Biden appeared on The Don Lemon Show on July 22, where Don Lemon asked about his relationship with Tapper. Hunter said he had known the CNN journalist for about 25 years before delivering a harsh assessment of both his work and character.
“I think that Jake is a complete and utter a-hole,” Hunter said, with the profanity censored. He also called Tapper a “really poor journalist” and said he did not consider him a decent person. The Hunter Biden rant grew more pointed when he compared Tapper to Brick Tamland, Steve Carell’s clueless character in Anchorman.
Much of Hunter’s criticism centered on Original Sin, the 2025 book Tapper co-wrote with Axios reporter Alex Thompson. The book examined Joe Biden’s age, health and unsuccessful attempt to seek another term. It also alleged that members of the former president’s family and inner circle limited scrutiny of his condition.
Hunter rejected that portrayal during the Don Lemon podcast appearance. He criticized how Tapper had discussed him, Jill Biden and Joe Biden, adding that he had no reason to offer a diplomatic response because he was “not running for anything.”
CNN defended Tapper after the remarks. A network spokesperson described him as a respected journalist who has challenged powerful figures regardless of party or title. The spokesperson also called Hunter’s comments “frankly ridiculous.”
This was not Hunter’s first public clash with Tapper. He previously attacked the anchor over his criticism of Jill Biden’s memoir and its account of Joe Biden’s fitness during the 2024 campaign. Hunter has also made headlines for his unusual claim about Washington Republicans and his comments about a possible 2028 political run.
Tapper has not personally responded to the latest attack. Still, CNN news coverage of the exchange has placed the pair’s long-running dispute back in the spotlight.
For Hunter, the issue appears to extend beyond one book review. His remarks suggest he sees Tapper’s reporting as part of a broader effort to blame the Biden family for how Joe Biden’s campaign ended.
