Ex-Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s relationship has navigated many vicissitudes and settled on a strange spot.
The couple, who were married 40 years ago, now live apart, but still seem to have a connection.
Royal expert explains their unusual dynamic
According to InStyle, the couple “seemed to get on better” after they split up. However, royal biographer Andrew Lownie said that the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, involving both of them, has impacted their relationship, leaving it “clearly fractured”. Royal biographer Ingrid Seward told Hello! said, that the couple’s relationship has improved because “there was no obligation.”
She added, “It was a strange kind of relationship.”
Seward also commented on the odd dynamic of the relationship, saying, “I don’t know if Andrew wanted her back, but I think he never stopped loving her. There were photographs of her all over the house. He saw her as the mother of his children, and he would always protect her, because he is very loyal to the people he cares about.”
Lowrie also weighed in and said that there were moments Prince Andrew wanted to be together again for the sake of their two daughters. Seward has noted that Ferguson was “bored stiff” in her marriage and it “drove her into the arms of other men.” She also detested how unsophisticated Prince Andrew was. “She is very charming and would never speak down to someone she considered her inferior, but Andrew did, and she hated that,” she said.
Though they stayed together after the divorce, there was no romance between them. However, even their Royal Lodge stay did not last forever. The ex-prince was stripped of all royal titles by King Charles in 2022, rendering him a commoner.
Andrew was arrested on February 19 at his new house in Sandringham. He was released later in the day without being criminally charged.
However, their relationship fractured with the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. Andrew’s relationship with the sex offender has been under scrutiny for a long time. According to The Guardian, he later settled with survivor Virginia Giuffre without any admission of liability. Ferguson has denied any connection with the paedophile and has supported her ex-husband throughout the ordeal.
Ex-Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson married on July 23, 1986. They split in 1992 and divorced in 1996. They have two daughters together: Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice.
