Sylvester Stallone is reportedly backing James Franco’s return to a major Hollywood franchise through the next Rambo movie. An insider claims the action star believes Franco’s casting could pay off despite controversy surrounding his comeback.
Sylvester Stallone’s reported Rambo reboot plans have sparked debate over James Franco’s role
RadarOnline reported that Stallone views Franco as a risk worth taking in John Rambo, the upcoming prequel. Stallone serves as an executive producer, while Franco has joined a cast led by Noah Centineo as a younger John Rambo.
“Casting James in this new Rambo movie is a risk,” an unnamed insider told the outlet. The source claimed Stallone trusts unconventional choices and believes the film’s core audience will focus on the franchise rather than Franco’s past controversy.
However, the report does not establish that Stallone personally selected Franco. Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Franco has a minor role but did not identify his character. RadarOnline’s source claimed he will play a villain, making that detail unconfirmed. Jalmari Helander is directing the prequel, which also features David Harbour as Col. Sam Trautman. Stallone is not expected to reprise the role he first played in 1982’s First Blood.
The James Franco Rambo casting has revived discussion of allegations that disrupted his mainstream career. Five women accused Franco of sexually inappropriate behavior in 2018. His representatives denied the allegations. Two former acting students later sued him, and the case ended in a 2021 settlement. Franco subsequently acknowledged sleeping with students and said it was wrong.
Seth Rogen has remained clear about ending his professional relationship with Franco. He recently said his position had not changed and that he had no interest in working with him again. Franco returned through independent and European projects before joining John Rambo. His recent public reemergence has also included unusual social media posts that generated questions from viewers.
Stallone continues to revisit the work behind his best-known franchises, including the intense preparation required for Rocky. His executive producer credit gives the Rambo reboot a direct link to its original star.
Stallone’s involvement continues to connect the upcoming Rambo prequel to the franchise’s original star. While Franco’s role in the film has been confirmed, the claim that Stallone personally sees his casting as a worthwhile gamble comes from an unnamed insider. Whether Franco’s return will lead to further controversy remains to be seen.
