A dog behavior expert suggests the couple’s pet may serve as a “trial run” for parenthood. The expert said caring for a Samoyed requires a level of commitment that closely mirrors the responsibilities of raising children.

The comments come just weeks after Swift and Kelce’s reported $20 million wedding at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Despite widespread public interest, the event has remained largely private.
Fans know Taylor Swift for her love of cats, but she recently surprised them by adding a Samoyed to her family. Onlookers spotted the singer traveling on her private jet with the fluffy white dog, which she reportedly welcomed around Christmas 2024.
Accredited dog trainer and behaviorist Carolyn Menteith said Samoyeds can make great first dogs for newly married couples. However, the couple must dedicate enough time to caring for the breed.
Menteith noted that Samoyeds constantly love human company, earning them the nickname “velcro dogs.” “An active newly married couple who are looking for a devoted dog to follow them everywhere and look fabulous while they’re doing so, a Samoyed could be perfect,” Menteith said. “However, busy couples will likely find their high-maintenance needs overwhelming.”
Menteith believes that looking after a Samoyed can teach couples many of the same lessons as becoming parents.
Swift recently wrapped up the Eras Tour. Meanwhile, Kelce must focus on the Kansas City Chiefs’ commitments from August through January. Given their demanding schedules, the expert acknowledged that caring for the breed could be particularly challenging.
Even so, she said the experience could strengthen their partnership and prepare them for future family responsibilities. “Parenthood is not a part-time job — and neither is looking after a Samoyed!” Menteith said.
