A man has filed a lawsuit against Pima County, alleging he was wrongfully detained in connection with the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. Carlos Palazuelos is now suing Pima County for $2.5 million.

A Phoenix law firm has filed a notice of claim against the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Chris Nanos, and Detective Earl Gieron. The filing represents three people who allege they were wrongfully targeted, ABC15 Arizona reports.
According to the lawsuit, deputies detained Palazuelos at gunpoint on February 10. They held him for about seven to eight hours before releasing him without charges. Deputies also detained two of his family members as part of the investigation.
Daniel Maddox says he was handcuffed and held at gunpoint, while homeowner Josefina Maddox says deputies damaged the property while carrying out a search warrant. Daniel Maddox is asking for $500,000, while Josefina Maddox is seeking $250,000 in compensation. The claim was filed this week and seeks a combined $3.25 million in damages on behalf of three individuals.
Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of television journalist Savannah Guthrie, was last seen on the night of January 31 after arriving home from dining with family in the Catalina Foothills, Arizona. Surveillance footage from her home showed a masked individual, and authorities discovered her blood at the location.
No arrests have been made, and investigators have not reported any new leads. The family has offered a $1 million reward for information, alongside a $100,000 reward from the FBI.
In an interview that aired on the Today Show on July 28, Nanos said authorities have a significant amount of DNA and video evidence to review. He explained, as quoted by People, “We have so much DNA to sort through. We have so much in terms of video evidence to look at.” Nanos added, “I’m still positive that we’re gonna resolve this case.”
