Jen Psaki wasted no time addressing Melania Trump’s return to the spotlight after a month-long absence. The MS NOW correspondent argued that it was not “normal” for the first lady to remind the Americans that she exists.
Jen Psaki questioned Melania Trump’s limited public presence after her latest White House appearance
On August 20, Melania made her first public appearance at the White House Rose Garden. She highlighted her Fostering the Future initiative, which is expanding its national network through a $2 million donation from IndyCar and Fox Corporation. The first lady opened her speech by acknowledging her absence, telling the audience, “Good afternoon. I heard you missed me? Here I am.”
Jen began her show, The Briefing, by mocking Melania’s highly anticipated return. She said, “For the first lady of the United States to have to come out and remind us all that she exists.” “There are a lot of times in the Trump era that we have to remind ourselves…” added.
She described it as unusual, noting that the first lady had only been seen in public on 38 days this year. “That is not normal,” she added. Psaki pointed to Trump’s frequent appearances with Natalie Harp, a special assistant and executive assistant to the president.
She said, “I don’t mean it’s not normal for the president to have aides who travel with him everywhere, including female aides. Believe me, I’ve been one of those several times. Plenty of presidents have those, but it is not normal for a person working in the White House to write intimate, devotional personal letters for the president… never mind leave them in his personal spaces.”
Psaki went as far as calling Harp the POTUS’ “adult babysitter” amid Melania’s prolonged absence.
The first lady’s last public appearance came at the World Cup final on July 19. Since then, she has skipped several high-profile events with Trump, including the Patriot Games and Sen. Lindsey Graham’s funeral.
