TMZ reported that Cowell plans to undergo a routine back procedure soon. Sources with direct knowledge told the outlet that surgery will sideline him for several weeks.
The report offered reassurance about the Simon Cowell surgery. Sources indicated that doctors had not identified a new major health emergency. Still, Cowell has a difficult history with serious back injuries.
In 2020, Cowell fell from a powerful electric bike. The accident broke his back and reportedly nearly left him paralyzed. He then underwent six hours of surgery to repair several fractures. His spinal cord narrowly escaped injury.
Reports later suggested that Cowell continued experiencing intermittent back problems. The upcoming procedure will reportedly address those lingering issues.
AGT now faces another question: Who will occupy Cowell’s chair? The report did not identify a replacement. His return date also remains unclear.
Cowell joined America’s Got Talent in 2016. He currently shares the panel with Howie Mandel, Sofía Vergara and Mel B. His blunt critiques and talent instincts have helped define the franchise.
His television résumé extends beyond AGT. Cowell became famous through American Idol and The X Factor. He also helped develop groups including One Direction and Fifth Harmony.
The break comes after another recent professional setback. The Sun reported that Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon accepted a presenting role on The Voice.
An insider told the publication, “Showbiz is infamously cut-throat and it’s not personal, but for Alesha not to even bother telling Simon about the deal is a real kick in the teeth.”
For now, Cowell faces a quieter challenge. The famously sharp-tongued judge needs time away from television to focus on his recovery.
