The possibility of Nicole Kidman returning for “Days of Thunder 2” may be partly in Tom Cruise’s hands, but the final decision reportedly rests with the actress herself. Cruise is said to want his former co-star back for the sequel, but an insider claims Kidman has the ultimate say.
Now an Oscar winner and accomplished producer, Kidman is reportedly willing to return only if the role feels right and genuinely fits her.
Tom Cruise reportedly wants Nicole Kidman in Days of Thunder sequel
Tom Cruise is reportedly hoping Nicole Kidman will return for “Days of Thunder 2.” Paramount is moving forward with the long-awaited sequel, more than three decades after the original NASCAR movie hit theaters. Cruise is expected to reprise his role as race car driver Cole Trickle and produce the follow-up with Jerry Bruckheimer.
Kidman, meanwhile, played Dr. Claire Lewicki in the 1990 film. Naturally, her character became romantically involved with Cole. The film also marked an important moment in Kidman’s personal life, as she and Cruise began a relationship while working on it. They later married and remained together for 11 years before divorcing in 2001.
Now, according to a RadarOnline source, Cruise would like to bring his former co-star back. However, the insider claimed that Kidman has the final say. “Tom apparently wants it to happen, but the ball is in Nicole’s, and only Nicole’s, court,” the source said.
That could make negotiations complicated. The insider pointed to Kidman’s work behind the scenes as one reason she may not immediately sign on. According to the source, much of her focus in recent years has been on supporting female directors and producers.
As a result, the insider alleged that “Days of Thunder 2” would need to offer her something “creatively perfect for her to do it.” Even a small appearance may not be enough on its own. The source argued that a cameo would have to feel like the right fit for Kidman.
Still, the possibility has apparently not been ruled out. The insider claimed she has not officially rejected the project. “The whole ‘Days of Thunder’ team makes more money if she agrees to appear, even briefly, in this film,” the source added.
