While Tom Holland’s No Way Home featured Andrew Garfield’s much-loved return, Spider-Man: Brand New Day did not bring the same surprise. However, that has not stopped the actor from sharing his ideas, and he is now talking about his idea for a gay Spider-Man.
Andrew Garfield says he still believes anyone should be able to wear Spider-Man’s suit
Recently, the British-American actor spoke with Entertainment Weekly, where he discussed Spider-Man along with several other topics. During the conversation, he specifically talked about his 2013 idea of “Why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”, and Andrew Garfield still believes that anyone can wear Spider-Man’s suit.
Garfield said, “It was an exercise in rebellion that I felt passionate about. I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit.”
“That’s the point of why it’s such a kind of universally beloved character, one of the greatly beloved characters in the history of fiction,” he added
Later, Garfield continued, “because you don’t see skin color, you don’t see gender, you don’t see sexuality. Anyone can project themselves into that suit.”
“I like the idea of a place where everyone is being honored and everyone is being included, and it was just a kind of act of saying, ‘Well, why not?’ And you’ll be telling on yourself if you have a strong opinion either way,” the Tony winner concluded
Andrew Garfield’s superhero journey began in 2012 with The Amazing Spider-Man, followed by the second part in 2014. In 2016, Tom Holland took over as the new Peter Parker, and after a long gap, Garfield returned in 2021 to add another layer to the multiverse concept in No Way Home.
At 43, Andrew Garfield is the fourth actor to play Peter Parker. In chronological order, Danny Seagren was the first. Nicholas Hammond was the second. Tobey Maguire was the third, followed by Andrew Garfield as the fourth. Tom Holland became the fifth.
