Donald Trump is aiming to settle the football/soccer debate once and for all. It’s something widely discussed around the globe and has been for years.
When you talk about football in North America, it can be confusing, given the popularity of the NFL. At the draw for the 2026 World Cup on Friday, the US President proposed a solution. “We have to come up with another name for the NFL stuff,” said Donald. The word “soccer” in the US according to the President creates conflict because of another thing called “football.” In some countries, the NFL is often referred to as American football.
Donald Trump is causing controversy in a new way
Wherever you go, people will have varying opinions on whether it’s soccer or football. While the President had his own thoughts, the debate won’t likely be settled anytime soon. However, Donald believes that when it comes to soccer in the United States, “we seem to never call it that.”
Contrary to Donald’s words, though, the governing body for the US national team is the United States Soccer Federation. For many other nations, mostly in Europe, football is included. In England, where the game was invented their governing body is the Football Association (FA).
If you look at the early days of the NFL, it was originally formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association. For the 1922 season, though, it became the National Football League and has remained that way ever since.
The sport of football was invented in 1863 when the FA was formed. The first World Cup, though, didn’t take place until 1930. Football or soccer, depending on where you live, is often referred to as the world’s most popular sport, with the World Cup every four years being its showcase event.
Donald recently earned his son Barron’s admiration for arranging a meeting between him and Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably the biggest name in football/soccer.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place next summer in Canada, the United States and Mexico. For the US, it will be their second time hosting the most-watched sporting event, previously organizing the men’s competition in 1994.
