Leonardo DiCaprio Gives Insights Into Martin Scorsese’s Movie-Making Process

Leonardo DiCaprio recently shared what it’s like working with Martin Scorsese during Variety’s Actors on Actors series with Jennifer Lawrence. After Lawrence briefly recalled a hallucination she experienced while filming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, she asked DiCaprio if he had any advice for working with the legendary director. He then explained that Scorsese often relies on film references. In fact, he will sometimes screen an entire film to make everyone understand the tone or pace he’s aiming for in a project.

During the conversation at Variety’s Actors on Actors, DiCaprio elaborated on how those references are shared while working with Scorsese. To this, Lawrence asked whether she would be required to watch all the movies to get the references right. The ‘Titanic’ actor then clarified that the films come in DVD format, and if she doesn’t have a DVD player, she should definitely get one. To this, Lawrence reacted by saying, “Oh my God. I’m going to kill myself.”

Further explaining how Scorsese takes inspiration from particular movie references to use in his filmmaking process, DiCaprio added, “But he’ll have screenings sometimes for just one sequence in a movie. If there’s something that he wants you to capture from an old film or the pacing of something, you might have a screening of a whole film just for a specific scene that he wants to see. We might see some Japanese ghost films for reference, just to get the tone of it.” However, he reassured her that she’ll have an “amazing time” working with the iconic director.

DiCaprio and Lawrence are set to star in Scorsese’s upcoming movie, What Happens at Night. It centers around a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town with the hopes of adopting a baby. During their journey, they check into a mysterious hotel and come across strange characters. They struggle in their adoption process as unsettling events unfold. They even begin to question the life they have built together.
