George Clooney Fires Back at Donald Trump’s Comment

Donald Trump reacted negatively to George Clooney and his family receiving French citizenship. The president mocked Clooney and his wife on social media, claiming that the former wasn’t a “movie star.” He also said that Clooney, affiliated with the Democratic Party, garnered more attention from his politics than his movies, which he deemed “mediocre.” The actor has now fired back at Trump’s comments.

On New Year’s Eve, Donald Trump mocked George Clooney, his wife Amal, and their family’s French citizenship. He wrote on Truth Social, “Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden.”

He continued, “Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat.”

Trump then attacked Clooney’s career. He claimed that the Ocean’s Eleven star received “more publicity” from his politics than from his filmography. He further insulted the 64-year-old, remarking that he was not a “movie star” but “an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics.” Trump concluded his rant by exclaiming, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Clooney responded to Trump’s rant shortly after. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Clooney referenced November’s US midterm elections. He said he agreed with Trump, adding, “We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.”

The Jay Kelly star and his family became French citizens on December 27, 2025. Notably, the family has been living on a farm in Brignoles in the south of France, which they reportedly purchased in 2021.

His naturalization happens amidst France’s plans to toughen its citizenship process via raised language requirements and a compulsory civic exam. Notably, junior minister at the Interior Ministry, Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, was apprehensive about Clooney and his family getting citizenship. Speaking to France Info, she said, “The message being sent is not good. There is an issue of fairness that, in my eyes, is absolutely essential (via BBC).

However, the French government defended the decision to grant Clooney and his wife citizenship. They noted that the couple “contribute, through their distinguished actions, to France’s international influence and cultural outreach.”

Interestingly, Clooney admitted to Canal+ that although his wife and children spoke fluent French, he was “horrible” at it.
