Reality TV can ruin marriages, but that’s not necessarily the case on Married to Medicine. We all remember that iconic moment from the Season 5 reunion, when the cast teamed up to save Dr. Simone Whitmore’s marriage. But did you know that she isn’t the only cast member who credits the show for saving their marriage?
According to Dr. Contessa Metcalfe, her marriage to Dr. Scott Metcalfe was also saved by the messy Bravo series. Is this show an anomaly, or is there a lesson to be learned here?
Dr. Contessa Metcalfe got real about the Bravo reality show

M2M fans know that Contessa and Scott’s marriage has had its ups and downs. We saw Contessa file for legal separation in Season 8, only for them to reunite in Season 9. The next year, she filed for divorce but dismissed it a few months later.
Clearly, their marriage isn’t perfect, but Contessa credits reality TV with helping them navigate their rough spots. She opened up about the surprising phenomenon during an interview on New York Live. In her eyes, it’s been helpful because it forces her and Scott to confront their issues head-on.
“One thing that happens on reality shows is you can’t just put a pin in it,” Contessa said.
She continued, “They’re going to ask you about it. You’re going to have to address some of the things that normally, in real life, you just don’t address.”
The wife and mother of three said that couples who can’t confront their feelings directly end up letting things fester. That’s when things can get shaky.
“It leads to divorce, which almost happened with us,” Contessa warned.
Of course, putting their relationship on TV hasn’t been easy. For example, we learned in Season 12 that Scott has never thrown her a birthday party. That opened them up to a fresh round of scrutiny from their castmates and fans alike, but still, Contessa said that her M2M experience has been helpful. Other reality stars should take notes.
“I think that’s one of the blessings of reality television,” Contessa noted. “They make you address issues.”
Married to Medicine airs on Sundays at 9/8c on Bravo. You can stream it the next day on Peacock.
