An unspeakable tragedy has brought a famous boy band back together. Louis Tomlinson recently spoke about the death of Liam Payne and the kind of impact it’s had on One Direction.
Liam died in 2024 after falling from the balcony of his hotel in Argentina. His death shook the music world and his bandmates. He was in Buenos Aires to support former One Direction member Niall Horan, who was performing on tour. One Direction went their separate ways in 2015. It seems like Liam’s death has reunited one of the all-time best-selling boy bands.

For all the negativity surrounding Liam’s death, there may have been something positive to come out of it all. The surviving band members of One Direction seem to be on good terms and bonding after a long time apart.
In an interview with Billboard, Louis said the group will always have a closeness, but since Liam’s death, “it definitely feels closer than it was.” Louis adds that they will know in time if the group remains close as the years pass. Given the demanding schedules they each have, he said he is sceptical they could maintain the kind of closeness they have right now.
Louis admits that he always knew Harry Styles would prosper on his own, while adding that he had the same belief in Niall. He and Zayn Malik, meanwhile, recently reunited for a Netflix road trip show. Louis says that he will never really accept Liam’s death. At his funeral, Louis, Harry, and Zayn made their first public appearance together since the latter left the group.
For Louis, singing back some One Direction songs isn’t easy, given he has a nine-year-old kid and some of their lyrics, as he put it, were “raunchy.” Louis will release his new album, How Did I Get Here, on January 23.
