Demi Lovato Opens up About Eating Disorder and What Has Been ‘So Healing’

Singer and actress Demi Lovato credits cooking as helping with her continued eating disorder recovery. She has been open about this issue being an ongoing and day-to-day struggle.

The songwriter recently discussed this topic on the Thursday, January 15 episode of Kylie Kelce’s podcast, Not Gonna Lie. Demi described in detail how she has dealt with her eating disorder throughout the years.

On the podcast, Demi says cooking has helped her heal. This is the reason she shares her eating disorder journey in her upcoming cookbook, ONE PLATE AT A TIME: Recipes for Finding Freedom with Food. “I started cooking, like, a few years ago. I am not an expert by any means, but I’m somebody that’s in recovery from an eating disorder,” she explained to Kylie.

However, Demi’s journey was a process. “When I first got into recovery, food was very, very overwhelming for me,” she said. She recalls breaking down in tears at the grocery store from seeing food everywhere. She said to Kylie, “And that, to me, was the enemy at the time.”

While in recovery, the Kiss singer learned coping skills. “They taught me the importance and the value of cooking and repairing your relationship with food through that way,” she explained. Cooking has helped improve her relationship with food. “I trust the food and it’s fun,” Demi said.

Demi announced her new cookbook on an Instagram post. “Stepping into the kitchen and learning how to cook has been such an important part of my recovery and healing my relationship with food,” she wrote. “This book is filled with simple, comforting recipes that have allowed me to reconnect with myself and find both freedom and joy in my kitchen.” The book “has allowed me to see cooking as an act of love and kindness to myself and those in my life…,” Demi explained.

ONE PLATE AT A TIME: Recipes for Finding Freedom with Food will be available on March 31.
