When paparazzi took photos of a topless Kate Middleton, Prince William was furious. The violation took place when long lens cameras were used to capture the couple in 2012. Both were at a private France estate catching some rays.
The princess was snapped sunning topless at Château D’Autet, a 19th century hunting lodge. William and Kate were taking some downtime prior to a nine-day Southeast Asia trip for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Prince William was ready to go “all the way” legally
According to RadarOnline William was extremely upset, calling it an “utter violation” and “gross breach of privacy.”
The French magazine, Closer, published the photos of Kate during the royal tour. In Russell Myers’ new book, William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, he wrote “it was as if time stood still” for Kate and William.
The prince called both his father and grandmother, wanting to make a statement and “sue the magazine.” Russell wrote this was the first time William “had personally engaged in taking legal action against the press,” and he was “determined to draw a line in the sand over the ‘monstrous behavior.'”
According to palace aides, the couple was “livid and ‘violated.” At the time, they were determined to hold the publications and photographers criminally liable. William was “ready to go to war with the press.”
Injunctions were quickly filed by the Palace’s legal team to keep the photos private. However, Chi, an Italian publication, included the topless photos in a 26-page spread depicting William and Kate’s French vacation. The photos were also published in the Irish version of Britain’s Daily Star.
However, the U.K. magazines never published the photos, and it turns out the timing was fortuitous. Shortly after her bare top was made public, it was announced that Kate was pregnant in December 2012. Because she suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum and required hospitalization, news of her first pregnancy was revealed early on when she was hospitalized.
