Timothée Chalamet faces backlash over his recent comments

The performance arts community has slammed Timothée Chalamet for his “no one cares” remark about ballet and opera. The Marty Supreme actor made the controversial comment during a recent conversation with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas.

During the discussion, Chalamet talked about appearing in TV shows in the past and urged viewers to “keep movie theaters alive.” However, the actor soon shared a different perspective on the issue, stating, “Another part of me feels like, if people wanna see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they’re gonna go see it and go out of their way and be loud and proud about it.”

The Dune star then made the comment, saying, “And I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive.’ Even though it’s like, no one cares about this anymore. All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership.”

Since then, several prominent ballet and opera companies worldwide have made social media posts in response to Chalamet’s dismissive remark. The Metropolitan Opera in New York City shared a video montage highlighting the extensive behind-the-scenes preparation involved in an opera production. The clip showcased the work of numerous professionals across multiple departments, including costume and set design, the orchestral arrangement, and more. In the caption, the Met Opera tagged the actor, writing, “This one’s for you @tchalamet…”

The English National Opera dedicated an Instagram post to Chalamet, inviting the actor to attend one of their shows for free.

“We’d love to change your mind — free tickets on us to help you fall back in love with opera anytime,” they wrote. Tagging the A Complete Unknown star, they added, “@tchalamet, this is your official invitation. Let’s see if we can change your mind.”
