Additional information has been revealed about the death of Nicholas Brendon, which was announced on Friday.
The actor, best known for his role as Xavier in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died unexpectedly at the age of 54. A statement from his family revealed he had passed away in his sleep. Now, a coroner has given further context to his health issues and final moments.
The coroner revealed who found the actor’s body
In a statement provided to People on Wednesday, Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner provided the outlet with further information regarding Nicholas’s passing.
“The decedent resided alone and was discovered by a longtime friend who had been staying overnight to provide care,” the coroner said. “Evidence indicated the time of death was very recent. Investigators are reviewing recently posted videos as potential evidence of prior illness.” The coroner did not provide information regarding who had discovered Nicholas.
Moreover, Zeiner confirmed there was no evidence of foul play in the Buffy actor’s passing. He reaffirmed his family’s statement that he had a long history of cardiac issues. Nicholas had been open about his issues with substance abuse, and previously revealed he suffered a heart attack in 2022.
Additionally, the coroner said nothing at the scene indicated his death was anything other than “natural.” The star was found “positioned as if asleep” upon his discovery. “The final cause and manner of death will be released upon completion of all findings,” the statement said.
The announcement of Nicholas’s passing, shared on Friday, corroborates with the recent coroner statements. “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the family said on Friday, the day of his passing. “He passed in his sleep of natural causes.”
Later, the family said in the statement, “it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past.” However, they added that he was “on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”
