Paul Feig recently endorsed Sydney Sweeney for the role of James Bond. The next cinematic adaptation following the super spy is far from release. However, that hasn’t stopped fans from fueling the rumor mill, suggesting names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Henry Cavill for the part. The reboot’s production has started taking shape, having already found its director, Denis Villeneuve, and writer, Steven Knight.
Paul Feig talks about Sydney Sweeney and Bond role
The Housemaid filmmaker, Paul Feig, is the latest to weigh in on the rumors surrounding the casting of the next James Bond. In an interview, he expressed his wish to see Sydney Sweeney, whom he directed in the aforementioned movie, tackle the role of the iconic spy.
Speaking to The Sun, Paul Feig stated, “There have been some cool Bond girls, but come on, let her be the super-spy, she’s great.” He praised the Euphoria actress, calling her “one of the hardest-working people” he knew. Continuing his praise by saying she was “so professional, so smart, so savvy,” he opined that she could play “a good spy.”
Feig isn’t the only one to suggest Sweeney for the role of Bond. The actress herself jokingly addressed the prospect last October. In a conversation with Variety, she shared her longtime admiration of the franchise and her excitement and curiosity about its future and said that her involvement in the next film hinged on the script. The two-time Primetime Emmy nominee added, “I think I’d have more fun as James Bond.”
Earlier that month, The Blast reported that the Christy star was the leading candidate to take on the next Bond girl. Her odds of nabbing the part at the time were -150, followed by Totally Killer’s Kiernan Shipka (+400) and Kendall Jenner (+500). Other contenders listed were Sweeney’s Euphoria co-star Zendaya (+600), Florence Pugh (+800), Sabrina Carpenter (+600), and Dua Lipa (+900).
Before this, The Sun alleged, citing a source, that Sweeney was “the top name on the casting sheet for Bond.” They claimed that she had the backing of both Denis Villeneuve, whom the outlet suggested believed in her talent and appeal, and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.
The hunt for the next James Bond is still on. Lipa’s fiancé and Eternity star Callum Turner has reportedly emerged as the current favorite.
