Ian McKellen shares his views on fame from X-Men and LOTR movies

Sir Ian McKellen, the actor behind iconic characters Magneto and Gandalf, recently offered a reflective gaze into the profound impact of his roles in the X-Men franchise and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The veteran actor noted that he had already established his acting career before the success of those movies. He told The Los Angeles Times, “I’d been on Broadway, the West End, toured the world. But nothing is like the fame that film brings.”

McKellen, hailing from Lancashire, England, shared that he nurtured a passion for theater from a young age. “When I thought of being an actor, I thought of being on a stage,” he reminisced. “My parents gave me the impression that cinemas were dangerous places,” the 86-year-old revealed. “They called them flea pits because you caught diseases there.”

In the 1960s, McKellen was working as a stage actor in England when he sought advice from an agent about transitioning to film. The agent counselled him to wait until his late 20s, “when women find men most attractive.” However, his breakthrough film role as Magneto in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men came much later, when he was 60.

Mckellen is reprising his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers: Doomsday. He also hinted at returning as Gandalf in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. McKellen is currently promoting The Christophers, starring Michaela Coel, Jessica Gunning, and James Corden, hitting theaters April 10. McKellen has several other projects lined up, including Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol and Avengers: Doomsday.
