Elon Musk Gets Summoned in Paris Over Deepfake Content on X — Report

Europe’s most assertive regulators are preparing to take on the world’s most watched platform in a defining encounter. Paris officials have reportedly summoned Elon Musk to appear in Paris as questions mount over deepfake content on X (formerly Twitter). The development reflects rising global scrutiny of synthetic media on social platforms, as European authorities push for direct accountability from tech leaders.

French authorities reportedly summon Elon Musk over deepfake content on X

Investigators in Paris have summoned Elon Musk amid a probe into misconduct allegations linked to X. French prosecutors started the inquiry after a lawmaker in France argued that biased algorithms on X likely interfered with an automated data processing system. Its focus broadened when Grok, the platform’s AI, produced content that allegedly denied the Holocaust, a criminal offense in France.

As reported by The Guardian, the investigation is further examining alleged “complicity” in the possession and distribution of pornographic images of minors, along with sexually explicit deepfakes. It is also reviewing claims of denial of crimes against humanity. Investigators are further examining alleged manipulation of an automated data processing system by an organized group, among other charges.

On Monday, prosecutors in Paris summoned the world’s richest man and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino for “voluntary interviews.” The Paris prosecutor’s office also scheduled additional X employees to appear as witnesses over the course of the week.

Musk received the summons following a February search of X’s French offices, conducted as part of a probe launched in January 2025 by the cybercrime unit of the Paris prosecutor’s office. Both Musk and Yaccarino were invited in their roles as X managers during the period under investigation. Yaccarino served as CEO from May 2023 through July 2025.

However, it’s not yet clear if Musk and Yaccarino intend to appear in Paris. The Associated Press received no response from an X spokesperson. A press inquiry to eMed, where Yaccarino now works, also went unanswered. When asked if Musk would risk penalties by not attending the hearing, the Paris prosecutor’s office did not comment.
