Stephen Colbert Reveals His Plans After Late Show Cancellation

Stephen Colbert is closing the book on his The Late Show era next month. This wraps up an eventful 10-year tenure filled with jokes, laughs, witty monologues, and special guest appearances, thus leaving fans curious about his future. Recently, the comedian hilariously addressed buzzing rumors surrounding his upcoming ventures in the next chapter of his career. CBS announced the show’s cancellation last year, chalking it down to financial reasons.

Stephen Colbert talks about his future plans

In the latest episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert told viewers how fans kept asking him about his future following the show’s conclusion. Noting how “internet rumors” were running rampant, he shared that he heard chatter about him “moving to CNN, announcing a massive wildlife rescue program, and running for the position of US President,” among other things.

As the audience cheered for him, Colbert said that whatever fans heard was “partially true.” He then mocked CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, saying, “Next year, I will be president of an animal sanctuary dedicated to caring for the rare Blitzer Wolf.” He further joked that it was a “captive breeding program,” asking people not to inform the latter.

Saying he wanted to put a stop to the rumors about him, he announced his “next big TV project.” He described it as “an hour-long network procedural drama torn straight from today’s headlines.” The comedian added that the story was about two detectives who are also uncles. “How can they be both?” He asked, “It ain’t easy, folks,” he remarked.

Subsequently, the trailer for the fake comedy show, “Uncle Cops,” played. It shows Colbert and actor John C. Reilly essay two buddies and cops, Mitch and Bob, who one day learn that they are becoming uncles. The pair soon finds themselves struggling to balance their professional life with their roles as loving uncles.

Hilariously, both parts of their life bleed into one another during an interrogation. Here, they hesitate to beat a criminal upon realizing he might be someone’s nephew. However, they proceed to thrash him when he confirms his parents were the only children in their respective families.

Jokes aside, Colbert does have a major project lined up that will keep him busy after The Late Show ends. Last month, Warner Bros. announced that the outgoing television host will be co-writing a Lord of the Rings film. Tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, other writers include Philippa Boyens, and Colbert’s son, Peter McGee.
