Sarah Paulson Faces Backlash After Met Gala Outfit and ‘One Per Cent’ Claim

Sarah Paulson’s unique look at the Met Gala has not gone over well. Online fans slammed the American Horror Story actress who showed up to the event this week with a one-dollar bill taped across her eyes. This appeared to be a political statement with Sarah revealing that her look represented “The One Per Cent.”

That is a phrase often associated with wealthy people like Sarah and the co-chairman of this week’s gala, billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The theme for this year’s event was costume art.

The alleged political statement Sarah made appears to be hurting her reputation. On Reddit, users are slamming the actress for the look. One person called her “inauthentic” and “out of touch.” Another label one put on her is that she may be “tone deaf.” Given that Jeff’s name was among the big ones being discussed ahead of the Gala, some wondered if Sarah’s look was a subtle protest against him.

On her Instagram account, Sarah showed up with a unique look, saying it represented being “Blinded by Money.” In addition, Sarah wore opera-style gloves with a red-grey tulle ball gown. That was from the Matières Fécales Fall 2026 collection.

Though she was partially praised for her outfit, critics pointed out that she attended one of the world’s most exclusive and expensive events. Thus, some saw her statement as a little hypocritical. Some noted that a ticket to get into the event cost around $100,000 per person.

This year’s art Gala dealt with the centrality of the dressed body in the museum’s vast collection. The dress code for the festivities was not quite as specific, though. It was called Fashion is Art. Season 13 of American Horror Story is expected to drop in September.
