Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are one of Hollywood’s most iconic couples. But, despite having been together for over four decades – yes, four decades! – the pair have never tied the knot. Now, Goldie has revealed the reason why.
The actors think marriage will “take something from both of us”
“I don’t like ownership,” Goldie defiantly said of why she and long-term partner, Kurt, have never married. “I must say that I think Kurt feels the same,” she added.
Elaborating on the pair’s mutual decision to avoid saying “I do,” she went on: “We want to choose each other every day.”
“We thought that by getting married, that was actually going to take something from both of us that we didn’t want,” the actor continued. “I thought, if I were a bird, and then someone put me in a cage, and then they leave the door open, I’ll never fly out. If they close the door on me, I’d probably get rid of all my feathers and become a bird with no feathers.”
This is not the first time that Goldie has made a comment like this about her relationship. In a recent PEOPLE interview, she said she appreciates the “freedom” in her romance with Kurt. “It means liberation,” she explained. “I don’t feel penned in.”
“Kurt and I are just living our lives together,” she continued. “It’s the right match.”
And perhaps that freedom is the key to their success. Goldie and Kurt have been together for 43 years, having started their relationship on Valentine’s Day in 1983. How apt!?
While they’ve never officially wed, Goldie and Kurt share a son, and also raised three children from their previous relationships, including fellow actor Kate Hudson.
