Barbra Streisand will not reportedly be attending this year’s Cannes Film Festival at the Grand Théâtre Lumière to receive an Honorary Palme d’Or on May 23 due to a knee injury. The 84-year-old EGOT winner, who is one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, expressed deep regret at missing the event, which would have marked her first appearance at Cannes.
Barbra Streisand will not accept the Palme d’Or award at Cannes this weekend because of an injury to her knee
In a statement shared by Cannes organizers, Barbra Streisand stated, “On the advice of my doctors, as I continue recovering from a knee injury, I am sadly unable to attend the Festival de Cannes this year,” and further wrote that she had been “looking forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition.”
“I was also very much looking forward to spending time with colleagues whom I so admire — and, of course, returning to France, a place I have always loved,” she continued. “While I regret that I can’t be there in person, I want to extend my warmest congratulations to all of the filmmakers from around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being celebrated this year. My heartfelt thanks to the Festival, and to everyone who continues to support and champion the art of cinema.”
Streisand is the first woman to win Best Original Song in 1977 and the female artist with the most number one albums of all time until 2023. Praising her, Iris Knobloch, President of the Festival de Cannes, shared a statement on May 7, writing, “She is a role model for all women, especially as she never lets difficulties hold her back.”
The Cannes closing ceremony, which will be hosted by actress Eye Haïdara, will still pay tribute to Streisand, despite her absence. Apart from her, The Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson and Pulp Fiction actor John Travolta are also the recipients of the honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year.
