Double murder accused Alex Murdaugh has filed a lawsuit against former Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill, alleging jury tampering aimed to deny him a fair trial.
An appellate court has unanimously overturned all murder convictions against the 2023 murder accused and ordered a new trial.
Alex Murdaugh is suing court clerk Becky Hill over alleged trial rigging
Alex Murdaugh, accused of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, in 2021, faced trial in Colleton County Circuit Court. He was convicted of two consecutive life sentences without parole.
The televised trial achieved huge media attention. And in the years that followed, clerk Becky Hill faced charges of jury tampering and of unfairly influencing the verdict.
The recent lawsuit adds to the ongoing controversy, claiming that Hill’s actions and interactions with the jury led to an unfair verdict.
According to TMZ, the defense claims that Hill frequently engaged in private conversations with the jurors, often in a single-occupancy bathroom, and encouraged them to observe Murdaugh’s body language during his testimony. Murdaugh also claims that a guilty verdict may help the sales of Hill’s book “Behind The Doors”—a factor that clearly motivated her. Reportedly, she also pushed jurors to wrap things up quickly, stating the hearings “shouldn’t take us long.”
The lawsuit has also dredged up Hill’s maligned past, in which she resigned from office in 2024 and eventually pleaded guilty to perjury, obstruction of justice, and misconduct in office. Following accusations against the Colleton County clerk, the court overturned Murdaugh’s conviction and announced a retrial.
In response, the court recognized Hill’s alleged misuse of public office and ordered a retrial.
This, however, has not released the accused. He continues to serve a 40-year federal sentence and a 27-year state sentence for stealing roughly $12 million from clients and his former law firm.
