The world’s richest man is generating backlash for a controversial tech tool. Elon Musk’s tech company Grok allegedly recently showed an AI image of a female UK politician on X. The AI tool was allegedly used to strip photos of her, putting the politician in a bikini.
The tool comes from the Grok chatbot. It has reportedly been used to sexualize photos of women and even children. The Member of Parliament (MP) in the UK has been a longtime advocate for tackling violence against women and girls.
Labour MP Jess Asato claims “Elon Musk knew that Grok didn’t have these safeguards”
A Labour Party MP doesn’t see any humor in Elon’s tech tool. Jess Asato told The Mirror, “I am filing a legal claim and taking legal action against xAI.” That’s what operates the tool. Elon’s company owns and designs Grok.
She alleges that people took images of her from the internet earlier this year without her consent. According to the MP, they were turned into sexual images. She calls the ordeal “pretty humiliating and violating.”
Jess is expressing anger about the images coming out, believing that Grok does an incredible amount of harm. She also took issue with the billionaire entrepreneur, saying, “Elon Musk knew that Grok didn’t have these safeguards.” Jess claims there have been warnings since last year that this tool could be exploited. She worried that it could generate potentially criminal material.
According to Jess, there needs to be more ways to protect women and girls from these sorts of things. Her legal case went to the High Court on Wednesday, with xAI listed as the defendant. The lawsuit focuses on the design of the Grok chatbot, allegedly enabling the manipulation of images of the MP.
Grok has drawn plenty of controversy since its unveiling. Elon, though, defended the AI tool in January. He claimed he wasn’t aware people were using it to apparently undress others. If Jess wins the lawsuit, it could set a precedent for the design of an AI system.
