Queen Camilla and Controversial Author J. K. Rowling Spark Online Debate After Endorsement

Queen Camilla’s latest royal engagement has sparked plenty of conversation beyond palace walls. The Queen’s meeting with Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling quickly ignited online debate, with supporters praising their shared focus on literacy while critics questioned the Royal Family’s decision to spotlight the controversial writer.

The meeting took place at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, where the pair discussed children’s reading initiatives. But as often happens with Rowling, the public conversation soon shifted from books to her widely debated views on transgender issues.

Public debate around J. K. Rowling’s views continues to shape reactions to her appearance with Queen Camilla at the Palace of Holyroodhouse

The Royal Family shared a photograph of Camilla and Rowling together on its official Instagram account following the meeting. In the accompanying caption, the palace said, “With a shared passion for books and a deep commitment to children reading for pleasure, The Queen and author J. K. Rowling have met at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.”

The statement continued that the two discussed “the importance of ensuring that young people have access to books and the vital part reading plays in opening doors for future generations.” The palace also noted that both women have supported victims of domestic and sexual violence.

However, the post immediately divided social media.

On X, some critics objected to Rowling’s inclusion, referencing her public comments on transgender issues over the past several years. One user wrote, “The Royal Family should not be posing for photographs with one of the worst trans-baiters in the world today,” while another commented, “The Royal Family standing proudly with probably the biggest trans hate preacher in the world.”

Others questioned the timing of the post during Pride Month, with a user even writing, “Ah yes, posing with the worst human being imaginable.”

Rowling has consistently defended what she describes as women’s single-sex spaces and has frequently criticized policies surrounding gender identity. Earlier this month, she commented on reports of a voyeurism arrest connected to mixed-sex changing rooms, writing that such incidents are “one of those things that never happens… has happened. Again,” according to GB News. Women’s campaign group Women of Dorset publicly supported her remarks.
