Matt Damon is going to step away from one of Hollywood’s most demanding acting traditions. The Oscar winner revealed that he no longer wants to gain weight for his film roles.
For him, the health risks outweigh the benefits at this stage of his career. Damon reflected on his past transformations while promoting his upcoming film.
Matt Damon said he’ll no longer gain weight for movie roles, calling the dramatic transformations too risky
In a recent interview with People, Damon explained that preparing for The Odyssey led him to focus on becoming physically fit rather than just making drastic changes in his appearance. He said, “It was more about just getting really, really physically fit, which just really involves changing your diet, just a whole lifestyle change.” Damon has emphasised that the entire routine was meticulously planned.
He said that this transformation made him healthier. The actor shared that he will not repeat this dramatic weight gain once he embraced for earlier projects. “I think if I had done the opposite and put weight on, that would have been dangerous, and it’s not something I’ll do anymore,” Damon said.
Damon shared that he was willing to take these health risks when he was young. However, he feels that they are no longer worth it. Damon had previously gained almost 30 pounds to portray whistleblower Mark Whitacre in The Informant!. He also lost significant weight for his role in Courage Under Fire.
The actor suggested that these physical transformations have come with lasting challenges. His latest remarks have marked a shift in how he has approached demanding roles.
The Odyssey marks Matt Damon’s third collaboration with the critically acclaimed director Christopher Nolan. The epic features an ensemble cast including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o. The film is set to arrive in theatres this week. Damon mentioned it was one of the most challenging productions of his career.
