Donald Trump Says Canada Should Pay Tariffs to US for This Reason

Donald Trump has once again threatened to meddle with tariffs. This time, the 80-year-old is targeting Canada for the country’s supposed failure to curb wildfires in the region. In a Truth Social outburst, the POTUS blasted his neighboring country for failing to properly monitor wildfires, which have now begun to affect air quality in the US.

Donald Trump says Canada should pay tariffs for wildfire

On July 17, Donald Trump revealed that he is considering adding to the tariffs Canada is paying to the US to compensate for the damage sustained by the US due to Canadian wildfires.

In his Truth Social post, President Trump held Canada responsible for “not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein.” He mentioned that the “filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air” affected the United States. Trump added, “the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!”

He continued, “The cost is incalculable! Canada has refused to engage in basic Forest Management and Debris Removal, knowing that such refusal will lead to exactly this result.” Calling it “Willful Negligence” and “a yearly occurrence,” Trump stated that it affected the US economically. He said that it was “costing the United States Billions of Dollars.” He added that the “cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying.”

Four Republican members of Congress penned a letter to Canadian PM Mark Carney, holding the country accountable for its wildfires. They stated that they would no longer accept “apologies in place of action.” They added, “If Canada will not manage its forests to prevent these fires, the United States will look elsewhere and act on our own to protect our people,” they noted, as per The Canadian Press News.

Carney responded, “Fighting climate change is the responsibility of all countries, including the United States,” in a news conference.

The premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, also hit back at US politicians in a recent interview. There, he noted, “I truly believe the Americans are good neighbors.” “If there are some politicians out there chirping away, well maybe what you should do other than complain is send support, send help,” as per Reuters.
