Cardi B called herself “hip-hop’s Britney Spears” in an Instagram Stories video on Monday, July 20. She said the media tracks nearly everything she does while ignoring similar behavior from other celebrities.
“I’m really hip-hop’s Britney Spears,” Cardi said. She argued that she knows private information about famous people, but reporters remain far more interested in her choices. Mobbish on Instagram preserved her remarks after the Story expired. Cardi also acknowledged the trade-off that comes with public fascination. She said she must “take the good with the bad” because people follow the drama surrounding her career and personal life.
The Cardi B comparison followed a shorter message on X. Cardi did not mention Maduka Okoye or Jelicia Westhoff in either post, leaving the connection open to interpretation. “Just know … I understand Britney Spears,” she wrote, without explaining what prompted the message.
Her comments arrived as attention around Nigerian goalkeeper Okoye intensified. Cardi and Okoye recently sparked dating rumors during Paris Fashion Week before attending a group dinner together in Venice.
The situation grew more serious after Okoye’s former partner, Westhoff, posted allegations against him. She accused the soccer player of abuse, infidelity, and neglecting their son. Okoye has not publicly answered those claims, and no independent evidence has confirmed them.
Westhoff later said her criticism focused on Okoye, not Cardi. Still, the allegations pulled the rapper into another online storm because she appeared beside him. The controversy also revived questions about Cardi’s private life following her reported split from Stefon Diggs. Neither Cardi nor Okoye has confirmed a romance.
For Cardi, the headlines appear to support her point. Success in hip-hop and pop music has brought influence, but it has also made her personal decisions public property.
