Cecilia Vega says CBS News asked her to report events that never happened. The network calls her account untrue. The former “60 Minutes” correspondent spoke Thursday with ABC News correspondent John Quiñonesnes at a National Association of Hispanic Journalists conference in New Orleans. Status first reported her remarks, which come three months after CBS fired her in a wider shake-up.
Cecilia Vega claims Bari Weiss urged her team to report incidents they couldn’t verify
According to Variety, Vega never explicitly identified Bari Weiss as the person making those editorial requests. She referred to the “new administration at CBS News” and described changes after new leadership began attending editorial screenings.
Vega attributed the directives to the “new administration at CBS News” rather than naming Bari Weiss. The Bari Weiss 60 Minutes era began last fall, when Paramount CEO David Ellison installed her as editor in chief of the division. Vega said the atmosphere shifted “when new people started showing up in the screening and giving their feedback on pieces.”
Covering the January 2026 fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota, she said executives encouraged her to include video of protesters assaulting people they believed were undercover ICE agents. Her team found “no credible examples.”
Editors also asked her to use a clip of Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey saying he wanted police to fight ICE agents. Her team reviewed “every frame” without locating it. “That never happened,” Vega said.
On a West Virginia story about SNAP cuts, she said management questioned why she had not interviewed Vice President JD Vance or cited “Hillbilly Elegy.” For an Iran war segment, she said editors told her to open with a line she considered an “administration talking point.”
CBS News rejects the account, pointing to its May statement: “We respect Ms. Vega and her contributions, but her claims are not based in reality.” It added that none of her examples reached air. A spokesperson cited Weiss’s June remarks that “What’s being called ‘editorial interference’ is in reality the job description of an editor in chief.”
The 60 Minutes controversy now rests on competing accounts. Vega said she still does not know why CBS fired her. “I still have not been given a reason,” she said.
